Luchadoras

The next project I have my sights set on is a series of portraits of Luchadoras - female Mexican wrestlers. This continues my work on 'non-conventional' forms of beauty, what it means to be 'feminine'.... And my general fascination with people who are outside of the mainstream... (in other words - people I find interesting!)

During my research I found this short doc (12 min) which shows you some of them in action. Totally fantastic! Have a look! www.shortoftheweek.com/2017/01/05/luchadora/

Can't book a judge by it's cover. Or something...

Not only did this book get a decent review - they even (favourably!) mentioned my cover artwork. Which was nice. (I should probably get around to reading this one day - it's apparently rather good)...

You can buy it on Amazon here (kindle / print / etc)

So, umm, I got bored. And it turned out I have a friend who gets bored, too. And, well, you know, we both think we're funny. Then this happened.  The 'Readers' Wives' Facebook page.

basically we make a bunch of obscene and completely immature memes, bastardising much loved children's stories and the like.

If you ask me, it's pretty funny. But some might find it offensive... so, be warned.

I knew it had been a long time since I'd done any figure drawing, but it only really hit me when I turned my phone on to 'silent'. Mobile phones didn't exist last time I did this! Now I'm doing it every Thursday and I love it. I used to think that figure drawing was the closest experience I had to meditation. I'm not sure that's accurate but certainly time seems both stretched to eternity and over before you know it... which is a bit odd. Anyway here are some pics... these ware painted with acrylic, using a brush taped to the end of a broomstick. 10 min poses.

And these are my first ink drawings! For some reason I had never used ink before. It's great! 10 min poses.

Andrea Cartategui at Karen Huber Gallery - photo by Matt Willis-Jones 23/09/18
Clue's in the title. Yes, between the torrential rains this weekend we made our way through a dozen or so galleries. Not as good as last year to be honest but not as bad as my obnoxious cartoon below.

A very immature cartoon by me. I have no idea who these people are. They're probably lovely.
Perhaps the most fun we had was making our way from gallery to gallery... At least, I had fun photographing Andrea every second block...
