Some of my digital paintings from last century...
When I came out of film school in the late 90s, film was expensive, video was crap, and digital was expensive crap. It became clear I wasn't going to be making a film anytime soon, so I reverted to making artwork that could be hung on a wall, but in 1997, using photoshop as a painting tool wasn't seen as a valid art form: I had other artists saying 'Those are cool, you should paint them!', and designers telling me I was using photoshop wrong - on top of which I had to explain to people that the images were drawn from scratch and not derived from photographs in any way. Which was all was pretty annoying. Nonetheless I had several exhibits in Chicago between 1998 and 2000 (including participating in the 24 hour 1998 'Bright Spot' exhibit, showcasing new digital artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago) and managed to sell a few to pay the rent, but it wasn't until 2013 in Oslo that all of these were exhibited together in 'Guttorm Nordø meets Matt Willis-Jones' at Gallery Map, where I was declared a pioneer of digital painting... A description I was rather flattered by!
